One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a homesteading Mama is to capitalize on moments when I can squeeze in projects.

I still have 4 very young children at home, and even though they’re great helpers, I can get much more done by myself. Nap time is a great time to fit in a project, or right before bedtime when Dad is home and we can help tag team the kids 😉

We’ve been working on our hayloft for the last while. We’ve done it in sections since we’ve scavenged ALL the wood from dumpsters and demolitions! We only need a few sheets of plywood to cover the last section and she’ll be done!

We need to talk about pasture pigs! 👇

With a small 1 acre homestead We have to be smart about how we use our land. Pigs have been on the list to add to our farm for quite some time now. But if we want to better preserve our pasture we need to choose the right pig!

The Kunekune pig is a great option, and when we have been researching for a while now. With their upturned snouts, they can’t root as much. They are also a much smaller pig with a calm demeanor, which makes them great for a young family like us. As a true pasture pig they grow by primarily eating grass. This process still takes two years, though.

Which is why we began looking at the Idaho Pasture Pig (IPP). Like the Kunekune, they are also a pasture pig, with an upturned snout and a docile demeanor, but they only take about 10 months to grow to harvest weight!

Once we get our fences up we’ll take the plunge of starting our pig program, most likely with IPP. But stay tuned to find out!

*Ingredients*
8 lbs cucumbers prepared ahead of time
8 cups water filtered or distilled
6 cups vinegar 5% and pasteurized
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup salt
1 tbsp pickling spices
8 cloves garlic
8 tsp mustard seed
8 tsp dill seed or a couple sprigs fresh dill per jar

INSTRUCTIONS

**Pickling Brine**
-Into a large stockpot add 8 cups water (filtered or distilled), 6 cups of 5% vinegar (pasteurized, not raw, I used white distilled vinegar), 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup salt, and 1 Tbs pickling spices (you can make your own or buy premade pickling spices).
-Bring the brine up to a boil on the stovetop.

**Prepare Canning Jars**
While your brine is heating, prepare your canning jars by washing them in hot soapy water and rinsing them well, then place them, still warm, onto a kitchen towel on the counter.

**Prepare Canner**
Meanwhile, get your canning pot ready and the water heating up to 140 degrees F.

**Fill Jars**
-Into your canning jars add 1 clove of garlic, 1 teaspoon of mustard seed, 1 teaspoon of dill seed (or a couple of sprigs of fresh dill in each jar).
-Next, slice your cucumbers into spears (or leave them whole, or slice them into coins) and pack your jars as full as possible.
-Once your brine has come up to a boil, remove it from the heat and immediately fill your jars with brine leaving 1/2 inch headspace.
-Using a bubble remover, slide it down around the edges of the jar to allow any bubbles to escape. Adjust headspace by adding more brine, if needed.
-Add your two-part canning lids and tighten to fingertip tight.

**Canning Instructions**
-Transfer jars to your water bath or electric canner and adjust the water level, if needed, so the jars are covered with 1-2 inches of water.
-Using your thermometer, bring the water temperature up to 180 degrees F. Once your water is up to temperature, set your timer and keep the water temperature between 180-185 degrees for a full 30 minutes.
-Once 30 minutes have passed staying at a CONSTANT 180 degrees carefully remove the jars and set them on a towel-lined counter. Let them sit for 12 hours.

Unpopular opinion here, BUT… …a more hands-of

Unpopular opinion here, BUT…

…a more hands-off approach to parenting has served our children well. At least when it comes to play-time. And that’s not to say we aren’t involved as parents. I’ve definitely been called a helicopter-parent before! But as I let my kids explore the boundaries, they’ve learned where the limits are and developed a respect for what their little bodies are capable of!

The confidence they’ve gained as they learn through play is amazing!

One thing they like to say, especially my daughter, is, “Look how strong I am!” Then proceeds to show me some trick 🤣

So my expert advice would be this: let them play! Let them fall! Because then they learn to get back up!

You can do hard things! Homesteading brings so muc

You can do hard things! Homesteading brings so much more to the table than just a garden and chickens.

The struggle of working the earth and managing livestock for months on end for the end-goal is such a valuable life lesson to pass on to our children.

Homesteading is not an easy task. At best it is sweaty, dirty, and often, arguably, mundane work. Pulling weeds, shoveling poop, hauling water…not easy.

Stewardship of animals can be heartbreaking, cold, arduous work.

But our children are learning all that and continue to choose working every day because the rewards are exponential.

They learn compassion from taking care of their animals.

They learn to appreciate hard work and find joy as they accomplish their tasks.

The life lessons we learn from working outside in the homestead are irreplaceable.

This storm rolled in so fast! Brought with it hail and a ton of moisture.

I’ll always be grateful for the rain. I grew up in the desert where we got less than 1/2 inch annually. So we always take the opportunity to find joy in the rain. Even when it slows down projects :)

The biggest mistake we can make with our kids is… underestimating them!

Too often my kids surprise be in their abilities. Braydon is wonderful at giving that push to our children to try new things.

Jess only needed just a bit of encouragement to get on the bike. A few seconds later she was maxing out first gear! I love getting to watch their confidence in themselves grow.

Goldie has been one tough cookie since being attac

Goldie has been one tough cookie since being attacked from under the fence. The worst of it is hidden under her wings. The large gaping wound has healed beautifully and she has new feathers coming through as well.
